A Quick Social Media Case Study
January 19, 2010 by Kim Fox
UPDATE: Pants on the Ground is now a Facebook page. 1.7 million fans as of this post. One might assume most of the fans would be folks under 20 but, alas, I notice a good number of my own Facebook friends are fans of the site…and I turn 45 next week.

Still think social media is a passing fad? Try this on for size.
As of this moment, approximately 3 million Americans have logged on to YouTube to view one of versions of the video clip from last week’s American Idol where contestant General Larry Platt sings his own special song, “Pants on the Ground .” (If you haven’t heard about it, I’m sorry that you live in a cave.)
It’s not a “real” song. No “real” artist has recorded it. But, somehow, it has officially gone viral. In a big way. It’s only been 4 days, and there are multiple copycat versions of the song and even Brett Favre was videoed singing it after the Vikings win on Sunday. Yes, Brett Favre.
Need to spread the word without spending a fortune? Start thinking about how social media might work for your hospital.
