Jarrard Phillips Cate & Hancock, Inc. Adds Nine to Growing Team

VP hires include crisis expert, media relations and healthcare marketing executives

BRENTWOOD, Tenn., and CHICAGO — Nationally recognized strategic communication experts Steve Patterson and Mary Pettersen, along with veteran healthcare marketing executive Kim Reynolds, have joined healthcare communications consulting firm Jarrard Phillips Cate & Hancock, Inc., officials announced today. The three vice presidents are joined by six additional professionals whom all together represent an 18 percent increase in fulltime employees for the firm in 2019 alone.

“These are stellar additions to our team,” said David Jarrard, president and CEO of Jarrard, Inc. “We’re deepening our bench to meet the increasingly complex needs of our healthcare provider clients. Our new colleagues each bring a different and valued viewpoint to our firm, and we look forward to putting their unique skillsets to use for our clients.”

The new hires come on the heels of another blockbuster year for the firm, which saw annual revenues grow by 17.5 percent in 2018. The strategic communications consultancy is devoted solely to healthcare providers – from health systems to health services companies – and ranks in the top 10 firms of its genre in the nation. The team consists of former journalists, political operatives and healthcare executives.

New to the firm are:

Kim Reynolds, new vice president for the firm’s regional and community hospitals practice, offers clients perspective from 20-plus years influencing customers across healthcare and retail industries. She is a particularly valuable partner to clients at the intersection of strategy, operations and communication. There, she guides them through periods of growth and change with a keen eye on customer, physician and employee impact.

Previously, as vice president of marketing for LifePoint Health, she built the organization’s in-house marketing agency. She also served as an executive leadership consultant to both Community Health Systems and Quorum Health. Earlier, she led marketing for Saint Thomas Health in Nashville, part of the Ascension Health system.

Steve Patterson is the firm’s new vice president for crisis and issue navigation. Over his two-decade career, Patterson has successfully managed large-scale crises that threatened reputations and public safety. These range from advising the owners of Manchester Arena in the wake of the Ariana Grande concert bombing to helping health systems – including Cook County Health & Hospitals System, NorthShore University Health System, Advocate Aurora and other providers in Illinois, Indiana and Kentucky — navigate change.

Prior to joining Jarrard Inc., Patterson was a vice president at Chicago-based Res Publica Group where he worked with clients to elevate their profiles and protect their reputations. Earlier, as an investigative reporter at the Chicago Sun-Times and the Gary Post-Tribune, Patterson’s work triggered dozens of indictments, the establishment of new state laws and the overturning of two elections. He later served as communications director for Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart.

Mary PettersenMary Pettersen now serves as vice president for Jarrard Inc.’s health services practice. A trusted communications strategist and media relations expert, Pettersen has brought more than 20 years of experience collaborating with clients to optimize their brands, navigate challenges and enhance their reputations through media relations, crisis and issues management, thought leadership and executive visibility. Her skills also extend to community relations, public affairs and corporate social responsibility.

Most recently, Pettersen served as a public relations and marketing executive for the American Board of Medical Specialties, providing strategic counsel and media expertise. Previously, she directed business development for the U.S. Healthcare Practice of Burson-Marsteller and served as director in its Corporate/Financial Practice. Earlier still, she was vice president at Cushman/Amberg Communications.

Meanwhile, the burgeoning firm has added six additional staff members, including counselors, graphic designers and administrative support. These include:

Senior Managing Advisor Milli Vincent is focusing on internal customer engagement and change management for academic health systems. Previously, she spent more than seven years with Vanderbilt University Medical Center where she was involved in projects across the enterprise, led communications for Vanderbilt’s IT department and was a key diplomat in continuing the medical center’s partnership with Vanderbilt University.

Senior Advisor Brittany Hunter delivers clients effective communications based on the unique needs of their audiences. She previously was a public affairs and marketing specialist with Chicago-based Advocate Health Systems at their Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center.

Senior Advisor Taylar Kobylas has brought strong digital and social expertise to the firm. Previously, she was an account supervisor for Finn Partners where she developed program strategy and social media approaches for healthcare clients.

Senior Graphic Designer Shannon Threadgill has returned to Jarrard Inc.’s Nashville office following a three-year engagement at Pennebaker Inc., a Houston-based branding, strategy and digital marketing firm.

Graphic Designer Kate Blankerts joined the Nashville office from Franklin, Tenn.-based FarmVet where she updated that organization’s branding with cohesive designs targeting local, regional and national markets across print and digital spectrums.
