Dr. Mike Schatzlein – a former health system CEO, surgeon and healthcare thought leader – brings our clients a wealth of experience from many diverse nonprofit and investor-owned organizations.

Before joining the firm in his of-counsel role, Dr. Schatzlein was a senior executive at Ascension Health Care, the largest non-profit health system in the United States and the world’s largest Catholic health system.  Prior that position, he served as president and CEO of Saint Thomas Health from 2010 to 2015. There, he founded and chaired MissionPoint Health Partners of TN – now known as Ascension Care Management – a successful population health management organization that currently aids more than 250,000 members in seven states.

Earlier in his career, he was the market CEO and interim division vice president at Community Health Systems, a national health system headquartered in Nashville. He also directed the Northern Indiana Heart Institution’s transplantation program and was the first to perform a heart transplant in northern Indiana.

Outside of healthcare, Dr. Schatzlein founded Indiana audio-recording TRC Studios, which now operates as a private facility in Nashville. He also worked as a staff assistant in the White House during the Nixon administration.

Now based in Nashville, Dr. Schatzlein chairs the Center for Medical Interoperability, a 501(c)3 whose members include a national network of premier providers committed to connecting healthcare information and technologies to result in better patient care. He is also on the CEO Council for Nashville healthcare private equity firm Council Capital.

Dr. Schatzlein received his B.S. and M.D. from Indiana University, where he also completed his residency in general surgery. He finished his thoracic surgery residency in 1980 at the University of Michigan Medical School and received his MBA in 1998 from Indiana Wesleyan University.
