Scarola joined the firm’s Health Services Practice in 2021 following his service as vice president for communications and public affairs at MedStar Washington Hospital Center, the largest hospital in the District of Columbia. Charged with enhancing the hospital’s community profile, he and his team designed and implemented proactive strategic internal/external communications via publications, media relations, social media and digital outreach. Working closely with the institution’s senior leadership and government relations team, he also provided counsel on reputation management with the city government.
Previously in Chicago, as system director of public relations and external communications for the eleven-hospital system Presence Health (now merged with Amita Health), Scarola managed crisis and issues communications, public relations campaigns and external positioning to sharpen the healthcare system’s brand reputation with key stakeholders, including consumers, media, government, financial institutions, business partners and physician groups.
Early in his 20-plus year career, Scarola served as managing director for brand marketing at what was, at the time, the world’s-largest PR firm, Burson-Marsteller. Next, he spent over two years as assistant press secretary to Chicago’s Mayor Richard M. Daley, where he earned a “Ph.D.-like education” in effectively dealing with government offices, community organizations and businesses suffering all forms of media-inflicted duress. He then returned to the private sector as creative director for editorial content at Integrated Marketing Solutions, a marketing and PR firm specializing in healthcare provider, pharma and device clients.
Scarola has a BA degree in communications and philosophy from Loyola University Chicago with post-graduate study work in marketing at Northwestern University.
